Obituary for Lawrence Albert Simmons

Lawrence Albert Simmons, age 59, of Canon City, Colorado, went home to be with the Lord on September 13, 2013 in Canon City after a short illness.
Larry was born in Denver, Colorado on May 12, 1954 to Donald L. Simmons and Joyce Alene (Dallas) Simmons.
Larry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 12 and was baptized by his Grandpa Austin Dallas. He graduated from Douglas County High School, Castle Rock, Colorado, in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Debbie Neuburg in 1974. Two daughters blessed this union, Kelly Suzanne Simmons and Andrea Elizabeth Simmons.
Larry was gifted in many areas… he received a music scholarship with his trumpet and attended Trinidad Junior College, majoring in music, later changing his major to law enforcement. After leaving college, Larry worked for a variety of companies and eventually found his love in over-the-road trucking. He was really proud of the time he spent teaching at truck driving school. Retiring from trucking, he joined his brother Steve in Bozeman, Montana where the two worked on many construction projects through the years. After suffering an injury, Larry left Montana and moved back to Canon City, where he started LAS Construction. It was at this time that he met his companion, Roxanne (Roxie Abbott) in June, 2009. Larry was a gifted craftsman and enjoyed working for hours with his dad (he always called him “Pop”) in their shop refurbishing furniture, antiques and creating lamps and other items from wood he and Roxie would gather in the mountains. He was a caring son, and enjoyed helping his folks with anything they needed done around their place. He loved the Broncos and the Rockies sharing opinions and complaints about the games with Pop throughout the seasons. Larry was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, jeeping and just enjoying being in the great outdoors. He loved his place at Trout Haven.
Larry is survived by his daughters, Kelly Suzanne Simmons, Los Angeles, California; Andrea Elizabeth Simmons, Denver, Colorado; companion Roxanne Abbott; his parents Don and Joyce Simmons, Canon City, Colorado; sister Dawn (Greg) James, Burlington, Colorado; brother Steve (Lynn) Simmons, Belgrade, Montana; niece Jennifer (Mike) Quintana ; nephew Grant (Alissa) James; nephew Brian (Kelly) James; niece Theresa (Brian Steerman) Simmons; 4 great-nephews and 4 great-nieces; his former wife Debbie, best life-long friend and buddy, Tip Woodin, and a host of other friends and relatives.
Larry’s sense of humor and giving heart will be missed by all who knew him. At his request, his ashes will be released at Holy Cross City at a later time. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 21, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, Colorado.
