Obituary for John Edwin "Johnny" Ehmke

John Edwin (Johnny) Ehmke

Johnny, born June 3, 1926 in Kingman, Kansas, died January 14, 2019 in Cañon City, Colorado. His father, John F. Ehmke and his mother Harvilla (Shepherd) Ehmke were both from Kansas. The family moved to Colorado in the 1930’s, first to Rosita in Custer County, then to Fremont County. Johnny met Betty Lucille Driver in Canon City and they were married in 1947. In their 64 years of marriage, the couple had two sons- John Arnold (Cindy Lukassen) and Scott Alan (Mary Thiesing). There are four Grandchildren- Johnna (Bruce Beavis), Jason (Kimberly Howard), Lisa (Ray Mendoza) and Brian. Six Great Grandchildren- Kasey and Kobe Ehmke, Danny, Marcus, Brooklyn and Myles Mendoza. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Betty preceded Johnny in death along with sisters Lillian, Joan and Shirley. Johnny served in the military during WW II and again in the Korean War. He worked for several years at the Cañon Wholesale Grocery, then he went to work for the local power utility and retired from there after many years of service. His off time was spent camping, fishing, boating and traveling, but mostly his time was spent with his family and friends.
There will be no services per Johnny’s wishes. A family memorial gathering will be at a later date in Hawaii. In lieu of flowers or food, please make donations to the Fremont Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
