Wayne Clinton Kinney of Canon City was born in Colorado Springs to William Oliver and viola Myrtle Kinney on November 23, 1926. He died November 15, 2016 at the age of 89. Wayne attended Colorado Springs High School, graduating in 1944. After graduating, Wayne joined the U.S. Navy and was later discharged in 1945. Wayne worked as an automobile mechanic in his father’s shop, “Ollie’s Garage”. In 1954 he went to work for Universal Electric in Colorado Springs as a die setter and in 1967 he began working for Western Forge Co. in Colorado Springs. He moved to Canon City in 1972 where he worked as a foreman in Western Forge’s newly built factory. He retired from there in 1977 then worked for the Colorado Department of Corrections from 1980 until retiring as a sergeant in 1992. Wayne married Lela Irene Wilson on May 7, 1951 in the First Methodist Church in Canon City. They celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Wayne was a member of First Christian Church “Disciples of Christ” in Canon City, volunteering in many roles. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, camping, fishing, music, dancing, playing games and playing and watching sports.
Wayne is survived by four children, Dwight (Colynn) Kinney, Douglas (Peggy) Kinney, Marsha (Richard) Stewart, Beth Ann (John) Zentmeyer; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; brother, Leland (Evelyn) Kinney; sister-in-laws, Juanita Kinney, Bessie Mae (Edwin) Hall and Jeanette MacGregor.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 18th at First Christian Church of Canon City.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice.
