Jerry Johnson, born October 1, 1944 in Pueblo, Colorado, passed away February 24, 2018 peacefully at home in Canon City, Colorado.
Born to Keith Bratton and Louise (Buell) Johnson, he graduated from South High School in Pueblo. He then enlisted in the Marine Corp where he served in Vietnam and finished the remainder of his service playing in the Marine Corp Band.
He married Ruth Hansen and had three children, Shannon Johnson, Lance Johnson, and Dan Stevens-Johnson, who preceded him in death in 2003.
Jerry started his career in Westcliffe before moving his family to Canon City and working at Canon Market, First National Bank, Empire Bank, then to Colorado Department of Corrections, where he worked at Centennial and the DOC Warehouse. After moving to Rifle, Colorado, he continued his career with DOC at the Rifle Correctional Facility, from where he eventually retired.
After retirement, Jerry sold his house and bought an RV, which he used to spend his summers at Lake DeWeese and the rest of the year visiting family and friends in Pueblo and Canon City. Eventually, he remained in Canon City, close to family.
Throughout his life, Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with some of his life-long friends. His favorite places were the Twin Lakes area, Blue Mesa, Grand Mesa and Lake DeWeese. His other favorite pass-times were softball and bowling. Jerry spent many summer evenings over many years at the softball fields both in Canon City and Rifle as the team’s pitcher.
He is survived by his children, Lance (Nikki) Johnson, Shannon Johnson; grandchildren, Kellsey (Cameron) Fox, Kindall Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Tabor Stevens, Jarod Stevens; siblings, Roselee Barkley, Renee Johnson, Vernon Johnson, Ray Johnson, Russell Johnson, Jack Johnson, and Frank Johnson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of life, 5:00 p.m. Saturday March 3, Canon City Elks Lodge, 404 Macon Avenue.
